Review : Great workstation with a few irritants
I purchased my Z820 directly from HP but I am writing this review here in the hopes that I will save prospective customers some headaches. The model I got was the dual 3.1Ghz version with the 1125W power supply, liquid cooling on the CPU's, 32GB RAM, 1TB hdd and no graphics card as I wanted to install my own (nVidia GTX 690).
You will have to walk a very long mile to find a workstation that is better constructed and engineered than the Z820. It is beautiful, inside and out. The front panel has all the connectors you want and there's connectivity galore at the back too. Opening the side panel to show the guts reveals innards that are very clearly designed for excellent thermal management. Everything unclips easily (although to take off the cover that houses the CPU fans you must first remove the one covering the PCIe boards). The insides of the case are the neatest I have seen in a long while. A lot of thought has gone into this beast.
